Wellcome to Seinäjoki

I would like to wellcome you to Seinäjoki-city. This place is very important part  of Seinäjoki's history.

The Östermyra Foundry and the Törnävä Manor came into being in the early 1800s in Seinäjoki at the Tikkukoski Falls. The Östermyra Foundry was built and owned by the family Wasastjerna. The Foundry refined first limonite, then iron ore imported from Sweden. From 1825 on, the Östermyra Foundry produced gunpowder for the state. When dynamite displaced gunpowder in the 1880s, the Foundry stopped producing gunpowder altogether. Towards the end of the 1800s, the Wasastjernas had to give up the Törnävä Manor as a result of economic difficulties caused by the bankruptcy of their company, Tampereen Pella- ja Rautateollisuusyhtiö (Tampere Textile and Iron Industries). In 1904, Konstantin Törnudd, Assessor of the Appellate Court, bought the Törnävä Manor with its main buildings and surrounding areas from an insurance company. Törnudd bequethed them to the Seinäjoki rural commune in 1925. The City of Seinäjoki acquired the Törnävä Manor when the rural commune was annexed to the City in 1959.

Over the years, many kinds of activities have taken place on the premises of the Törnävä Manor . It has been used as a military hospital, a naturopathic sanitarium, and a school of home economics. Also, the City’s technical offices and maternity clinic have operated in the Törnävä Manor .

Since 1984, following its restoration, the Törnävä Manor has served as the city’s banquet rooms. The Törnävä Manor is not in public use. The general public has a chance to view the Törnävä Manor on guided tours arranged once a year, at the time of the Seinäjoki Festival Week.
